How DevEx withholding tax works
Until now, Roblox has paid DevEx money without keeping any tax back. DevEx is how Roblox pays creators real money for the Robux they earned.
From , Roblox treats a DevEx payout as a royalty: money for the use of something you made. US law then asks Roblox to keep back some tax for the US tax office.
How much depends on where you live and on whether Roblox has a valid tax form from you. It also depends on how much of your money came from US players.
The day Roblox pays decides, not the day you ask. Nothing is kept back from a payout made before .
How to calculate DevEx tax
Tax kept back = payout × share from US players × your country's rate
- payout
- What Roblox pays for your Robux, in US dollars.
- share from US players
- The part of your sales that came from players in the US. Only that part is taxed.
- your country's rate
- The rate of your country's tax treaty with the US, or 30% without one. A US person with a valid form pays none here.

What Roblox would keep back from one payout of $380.00. Each amount is an estimate, not tax advice, and the rate of Türkiye is not confirmed for DevEx payouts. Worked out by the same code as the calculator. Rules checked on .
One payout, step by step
Take a creator in Türkiye who is paid $380.00. Say 40% of that money came from US players.
The treaty rate of Türkiye, 10%, applies to that part only. So Roblox would keep back about $15.20. Roblox has not confirmed that rate for DevEx payouts.
If PayPal pays outside the US, it then keeps about $8.30. About $356.50 reaches the creator. Both rest on that unconfirmed rate.

Each country's treaty rate for copyright royalties, from the US tax office's treaty table, which says this column applies to software. Roblox has not confirmed which column it applies, so where a country's columns differ, as for Türkiye, India and Egypt, the rate is not confirmed. Checked on .
Why your tax form matters
Roblox asks every creator for tax information: a W-9 in the US, a W-8BEN for most people elsewhere. A valid form tells Roblox where you live. The information on file on sets the rate of the first payouts.
With a valid form, a US person has nothing kept back here. Someone outside the US gets their treaty rate, and only on the part from US players.
Without a valid form, Roblox may keep back 24% of the whole payout, wherever you live. Check your form in the DevEx portal before your next payout.
Why this is an estimate
The US tax office's table has several kinds of royalty, and some countries have a different rate for each. Roblox has not said which kind a DevEx payout is.
We use the column for copyrights: the tax office's table says it applies to software unless a treaty says otherwise. Your share of sales from US players is your own figure, too.
So every amount on this page is an estimate and not tax advice. A tax adviser in your country can tell you what applies to you.
The DevEx rates themselves are on the DevEx rates page. What changes with the tax, and when, is in the DevEx changes guide.
What to do before your next payout
Check your tax form
Open the DevEx portal and make sure your W-9 or W-8BEN is there and still valid.
Look at where your players live
Your Creator Dashboard shows where your sales come from. Type the share from US players under More options.
Choose the day
Type the day Roblox will pay you under More options. Before , nothing is kept back.
Work out the whole payout
The DevEx calculator shows what your Robux are worth and what your payout method keeps.
What this calculator cannot know
- Which kind of royalty rate Roblox uses. Every amount here is an estimate.
- The share of your sales from US players. Only you can find it, in your Creator Dashboard.
- Taxes in your own country. This page shows only what Roblox keeps back for the United States.
- Countries not in our list. For them we use the rate for countries without a treaty, which may be too high.
- The exchange rate on the day you are paid. An amount in your money is an estimate at the rate of .
Questions
What is the DevEx tax?
It is US tax that Roblox keeps back from a DevEx payout from . Roblox sends it to the US tax office and pays you the rest.
Is the DevEx withholding tax kept back from everyone?
No. A US person with a valid tax form has nothing kept back here. Countries with a treaty rate of 0%, such as Germany, have nothing kept back either.
What is the Roblox DevEx tax rate without a tax treaty?
30% on the part of your payout that came from US players. Without a valid tax form it is 24% of the whole payout.
Does the Roblox DevEx tax apply to a payout I asked for in October?
It depends on the day Roblox pays, not the day you asked. A payout paid before has nothing kept back.
Why does my share of US players matter?
With a valid form, someone outside the US is taxed only on the part of the payout that came from US players. Sales to players elsewhere are not taxed here.
Is this tax advice?
No. It is an estimate from Roblox's announcement and the US tax office's treaty table. Ask a tax adviser in your country about your own case.
Can I get the tax back?
Maybe. Many countries count tax paid abroad against their own tax. A tax adviser in your country can tell you how.
